Standing 6’6” on the courthouse steps, the former general who had led Texas to independence, served as its president, led it to statehood, and served as its senator and governor, was shouted down by the mob of rebels who wanted Texas to join the likes of Alabama and Mississippi in breaking America in half. His response? “I have the right to speak on Texas soil because I have watered it with my blood!”
His plea was that the state he loved stay with the country he loved. His loyalty was to the United States of America. History has proven the wisdom of Sam Houston and the folly of too many Texans.
